Stratford firefighters are continuing their fight for two trucks the department has sought for years and could be purchased immediately if the right permission were given.

The purchase was to be finalized at a special Town Council meeting Monday, Nov. 23, pending a resolution from Mayor James R. Miron declaring an emergency.

The council voted unanimously Nov. 9 to allocate $5,000 from its contingency fund to allow the purchase, without bidding, of two trucks used as demonstration models by Smeal, the manufacturer.

However, Miron told the Star Nov. 11 that the emergency declaration would not be forthcoming. He said the Fire Department has sought for four years to get trucks built to its specifications, which these trucks are not.

Miron also said bypassing bidding makes a “mockery” of the process.

The case is back in a state court after going through the Supreme Court

The back and forth battle over a controversial firefighter promotion exam in New Haven has a new wrinkle.

A group of black firefighters now wants to stop promotions for white firefighters who won a reverse discrimination case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The black firefighters argue they still have the right to challenge the validity of a controversial promotional exam that some view as racially biased.

The white firefighters sued New Haven after the city threw out results of the 2003 promotion exams for lieutenants and captains when too few minorities did well. In June, the Supreme Court ruled in their favor.

YONKERS — A 39-year-old city firefighter died today and two of his colleagues were seriously injured as they searched for tenants in an early morning house fire, officials said.

Patrick Joyce, a father of two and a 16-year veteran of the department, fell from the top floor of the burning 2 ½-story multi-family home and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two of his colleagues — another firefighter and a lieutenant — were in serious but stable condition in the hospital, city fire Commissioner Anthony Pagano said.

The 1 a.m. fire at 149 Waverly St. is suspicious, the commissioner said, because it was fully involved in two locations at the home.

Pagano called Joyce a “fearless and dedicated” man who gave his life today in an effort to save others.

“There were reports that people were trapped inside and the crew he was with acted immediately,” Pagano said.

Everyone in the home escaped before anyone was injured, the fire department said. Firefighters brought the blaze under control about 2:30 a.m.

The Red Cross is helping a total of 15 people in four families with emergency lodging, clothing and food.

As the sun broke, fire investigators and police continued their work at the charred building.

The city was planning to release more information later this morning.

Check LoHud.com for updates.
